• W2977837526 abstract "This is a prospective study to describe the prevalence and morphological features of benign endometrial polyps in women without abnormal uterine bleeding. Patients presenting in 15 ultrasound centres from 2011 until 2018 for indications unrelated to abnormal bleeding, underwent an ultrasound examination followed by endometrial sampling. Subjects in this study had ultrasound examination as part of routine check-up, follow-up of non-endometrial pathology or in the workup before undergoing treatment for uterine prolapse or ovarian pathology. Findings were recorded according the IETA terms and definitions. Evaluation included unenhanced 2D-scan in all and hydrosonography in 266 cases. Histology was obtained after office sampling (n = 644), dilation and curettage (n = 37), hysteroscopy (n = 1134) or hysterectomy (n = 388). A total of 2203 women were eligible for inclusion in the IETA3 study. Of these, 1055 (47.9%) proved to have benign endometrial polyps. Of these patients 480 (45.5%) were postmenopausal. Median (range) age was 49 years (20-85) and mean (SD) body mass index was 26.9 kg/m^2 (3.2). The median (range; interquartile range) endometrial thickness was 10 mm (2-33;5). A uniform endometrium was recorded in 572/1055 polyp cases (54.2%). In those with a non-uniform endometrium, 136/483 (28.2%) had regular, and 41/483 (8.5%) irregular cystic areas and 183 (37.9%) had a heterogeneous endometrial echogenicity. Cystic areas were present in 254/480 (52.9%) polyps of postmenopausal as opposed to 29/575 (5%) in premenopausal patients. Flow was detectable in 890 cases (84%): 527 (59.2%) had a single dominant vessel without branching and 78 (8.8%) with branching, 55 (6.2%) cases had multiple dominant vessels of unifocal and multifocal origin in 23/55 and 32/55 respectively, and 29 (3.3%) of polyps presented with scattered vessels. Endometrial polyps are common in women without abnormal bleeding undergoing an ultrasound scan for reasons unrelated with bleeding problems.
