- W2978162218 abstract "In my recent reading, I have found a common thread of change. The three sources I discuss here might not typically be linked, but in this case, each one signifies a new awareness of current attitudes and the shifts that are occurring as a result. It is true that the water industry has historically been male-dominated, but it is also true that the gender gap is shrinking as each generation enters water's workforce. The change may seem slow, but perhaps it's accelerating. AWWA membership data help to prove that point (I've included a figure to illustrate this). Here's what's interesting. Seven years ago, I wrote an Open Channel column about the changing gender mix of AWWA's membership—the idea being that AWWA's membership is a reasonable representation of the larger water workforce. At that time, the composition of the youngest generation was 36% female and 64% male, with older generations having far less female representation. My conclusion—“The trend seems clear and provides a reasonable indicator of how the gender balance of our industry is likely to evolve”—seems to have been spot on. In August 2019 the Business Roundtable published a “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation.” The Business Roundtable is an “association of chief executive officers [CEOs] of America's leading companies working to promote a thriving U.S. economy and expanded opportunity for all Americans through sound public policy.” These CEOs know the purpose of a corporation, but note their shift in focus. If you ever took a business class, you learned that the number one goal of a for-profit business is to maximize shareholder value. Now, for members of the Business Roundtable, it is number five. Preceding it in importance are (1) delivering value to customers, (2) investing in employees, (3) dealing fairly and ethically with suppliers, and (4) supporting the communities in which businesses operate. Despite the fact that 181 of the Business Roundtable CEOs signed the new statement, some critics questioned its genuineness. Think of it this way. They care about their customers, employees, suppliers, and communities—we do, too. Maybe we are more alike than we are different, and maybe now the reply to the remark, “You should run a water utility like a business,” is “We are, because businesses are being run like us!” “Connecting people to save rivers” is the tagline of the 30-year-old River Network, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Boulder, Colo. It strives to connect the nearly 6,000 local groups across America that protect and restore rivers and water. It empowers these local organizations and individuals with tools, training, and resources. In 2018 River Network had an epiphany—while some in a community care about clean rivers, everyone cares about safe drinking water. But the connection between the two is not always known. It became clear that this nationwide network of local river champions needed a tool to connect the water they were working to protect with the water the community drank. Armed with this realization, River Network created a clear, comprehensive guide about rivers, drinking water, and the systems that connect the two. I am proud to say that many of AWWA's “How Water Works” posters were used to illustrate a water utility's infrastructure and processes. You can, and should, download Drinking Water Guide: A Resource for Advocates from the River Networks website (rivernetwork.org); while you are at it, take a look at AWWA's How Water Works posters at awwa.org." @default.
