- W2978169907 abstract "The Karmic Weight of Inherited Things Anne Liu Kellor (bio) I crawl forward on my hands and knees, peering into the dark space around me. A little natural light from two vents on either side of the A-frame allows me to see the outlines of the boxes, bags, and baskets that remain in the attic. I turn on my iPhone's flashlight, then tuck it into the top of my bra facing outwards, before inching further along, careful not to sit up lest I poke my head on a nail—hundreds studded above me, holding down the solid surface of our new roof. When I first inherited this 800-square-foot cabin from my old friend and neighbor Frank, the attic and basement were crowded, rat-infested nests—filled in equal proportions with treasure and junk. Now, in the twelve years since Frank died, I've gotten rid of most of the junk—the musty blankets and clothes, mildewed papers, broken frames and furniture. I've also pulled down serving trays inlaid with butterfly wings from Brazil, a rug made of the softest alpaca wool from Peru, and old copper cooking vessels from India. Many of these things were purchased from antique peddlers in the seaport towns that Frank used to visit in his forty-some years working as a merchant marine. Year by year, I've sorted in bursts and phases, and over time the stuff has felt more known and accounted for, less mysterious and overwhelming. I feel like an archaeologist as I unearth each artifact, wipe away the dust, and examine it in the light. I wonder about the story that each item carries and how it was obtained. Now, as I fetch the boxes that have eluded me thus far, I realize that what I have saved for last may be the most complicated to contend with, both morally and logistically: the Native artifacts. Arrowheads, old hand-forged stone tools, trading beads, baskets, mostly gathered from the Inside Passage of British Columbia, Canada, I assume, where Els and Frank used to sail each summer, combing the beaches for treasure. I've long been aware that their home contained Native items, but until now I haven't had the energy or the time to fully assess what is here. To interrogate my responsibility to these things. ________ Els and Frank had no children of their own, although they had plenty of neighbors' children, friends' children, and nieces and nephews stopping by for visits. In 1998, Els died at age seventy-five from complications from pneumonia. Frank died in 2006, at age eighty-three, from prostate cancer. My family grew up next door to Els and Frank until I was ten, when we moved just a mile away. As children, my sister and I spent many afternoons playing in their home and [End Page 152] yard, a magical tree-filled mossy oasis that surrounded a rustic cedar cabin in a residential neighborhood in Seattle. A sense of creativity and culture permeated their home: large Japanese prints in gold frames and Els's watercolor paintings filled the walls; earthen pottery, old copper pots, and woven baskets lined the shelves; the radio was always tuned to classical music; piles of books sat in every corner; the kettle always ready to be heated. A giant brick fireplace sat in the middle of the large combined living and dining room, and the cabin's ceiling and walls were also a darkly stained, warm cedar. My home, on the other side of the homemade wooden fence, did not hold much that was old or sentimental. It was clean, uncluttered, the living room decorated with cold leather couches and plastic tables. My parents were loving, yet stressed, stretched as they were between my mom getting her PhD and later both of them working full-time, while caring for my sister and me, as well as many relatives. My grandmother from my mom's side lived with us, as did my uncle's family for a while, and my parents also helped my mom's other siblings and eventually her father emigrate here from Taiwan, a year or so before he died.
