- W2978260090 abstract "This study aims to investigate the evolution over gestational age (GA) of fractional anisotropy (FA) of the fetal neural tracts using post-mortem magnetic resonance (PM MR) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the corpus callosum (CC), germinal matrix (GM) and the corticospinal tracts (TCS) in non-fixated fetuses. All PM MR scans between June 2017 and December 2018 performed on a 3 Tesla MR system were reviewed. Only fetuses in which CC, TCS bilaterally and GM bilaterally could be defined by DTI were included. Fetuses were delivered after termination of pregnancy (TOP), executed for severe fetal abnormalities and approved by a multidisciplinary team. No PM fixation was carried out prior to MR. Whole body MR, including a DTI-sequence (60 directions, max 1300 b-value) of the brain, was performed as soon as possible. Philips IntelliSpace Portal software (Best, The Netherlands) was used for DTI measurements. 26 fetuses were included, mean GA of 24 w 5 days (d) (range: 16w 4d-32w 5d). TOP was performed for central nervous system abnormalities in 8, congenital heart disease in 4 and prenatally diagnosed genetic abnormalities in 3 fetuses. Genitourinary malformations, multiple system congenital abnormalities, arthrogryposis, lung/airway malformations and fetal hydrops were each present in 2 fetuses. One fetus had multiple vertebral abnormalities. Fractional anisotropy (FA) of the DTI-tracts decreased significantly with increasing GA (p-values ranging from < 0.001–0.019). In this study using non-fixated fetuses, we found a significant decrease in FA of the CC, TCS bilaterally and GM bilaterally with increasing GA. This might be explained by differences in the organisation of the fetal brain on a microscopic level. Further investigation is needed to fully explain these findings.
