- W2978350229 abstract "Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the most common chronic bloodborne infection in the United States. In August 2012, the CDC and USPTF recommended that persons born between 1945-1965 should be tested once for HCV infection regardless of their risk factors, augmenting prior HCV testing guidelines. We undertook a QIP to assess and decrease the number of people born between 1945-1965 who were not tested for HCV at our Primary Care Clinics to ≤50%. Methods: A pre-intervention study was done at our primary care clinic between August 1st and September 30th, 2014 to assess the percentage of patients at in the target group who were not screened. Clinic staff including clerks, nurses and physicians were then provided educational information as well as an educational session reviewing current recommendations. A limited number of posters were placed in clinic areas. A post intervention study was undertaken evaluating the target group who attended the primary care clinic between May 1st and May 31st. Results: A total of 815 charts were reviewed (Pre-intervention: 520, 64%. Post-intervention: 294, 36%). A large percentage of patients were never screened for HCV per current guidelines (82.3%) in the pre-intervention period. Following our education intervention, this number dropped to 71.8%. (P= < 0.01) (TABLE 1). Conclusion: Education of primary care practitioners showed a statistically significant drop in the number of people who remain unscreened for HCV based on current recommendations. However, further interventions are needed to reduce the number of unscreened patients born between 1945-1965 for HCV. These interventions should be multidimensional and target physicians, patients and healthcare workers. While a brief intervention may produce significant reductions, ongoing awareness programs and periodic reminders may improve hepatitis C screening rates even further.Table 1" @default.
