- W2979076602 abstract "Purpose: Chronic hepatitis B infection (CHBV) is increasing in the U.S. in part due to immigration of high-risk populations (3-14% prevalence in India/ Pakistan). While attention has been paid to CHBV rates among Chinese and other Asian populations in the U.S., less information is known about individuals from the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge regarding hepatitis B among South Asians in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Methods: A questionnaire-survey was developed and administered to adults above the age of 18 from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, or Sri Lanka who were attending a local health fair. Standard demographic data were obtained, including place of birth, age at immigration to the U.S., and highest education level achieved. Participants were asked if they had been tested or vaccinated for hepatitis B. They were also asked if they felt hepatitis B was a concern for their community and if they had received any education about hepatitis B. Additional questions were asked regarding their knowledge of whether hepatitis B could lead to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma, and what risk factors (e.g. vertical transmission, unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, presence of STDs, sharing IV needles during drug use, blood transfusions pre-1972, or incarceration) were responsible for hepatitis B transmission. Results: A total of 138 individuals (76 men [55%], mean age 49.2 years, range 20-78 years/62 females [45%], mean age 48.7 years, range 21-78) were surveyed. Overall, 23 respondents (17%) acknowledged having been tested for hepatitis B. 65 respondents (47%) stated they had not been vaccinated, while 41 (30%) did not know if they had been vaccinated. 62% of respondents said hepatitis B was a concern for the community, but 82% felt that hepatitis B education was inadequate. Nearly half of respondents knew that hepatitis B could lead to cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular cancer, but nearly 2/3 (65%) were unfamiliar with risk factors for HBV transmission. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated a lack of awareness and education about hepatitis B among South Asians living in the Washington, D.C. area. Most individuals had not been tested or were unaware if they had ever been vaccinated. Despite this, a majority (62%) felt hepatitis B was a concern for their community, and an even larger proportion (82%) felt that current education was inadequate. Most respondents were unable to identify risk factors for hepatitis B transmission. This questionnaire-survey demonstrates that hepatitis B awareness and education are low in this growing South Asian population. Future efforts need to be focused on screening, education, and vaccination to prevent hepatitis B-related morbidity and mortality." @default.
