Mots cles : Flore herbacee - groupements vegetaux - AFC - zonage pedoclimatique – phytosociologie The west central area of Senegal covering the administrative regions of Kaolack, Fatick, Kaffrine and a part of the Tambacounda region is marked by an increasing rainfall gradient. The area goes from Kaolack (West) to the east of Kaffrine region (Koungheul). This study is carried out at Kaffrine using two transects, showing pedoclimatic zoning, and in each one the characterization of the herbaceous vegetation by the phytosociological method is made in four sample of area (Ngambou, Pete, Haffe Lour and Darou Miname). Pedological studies have been conducted in each of these areas. The result shows that Kaffrine region, which is an agriculture, forestry and pastoral area, contains a flora of 63 herbaceous species distributed in 50 genera and 20 families. The herbaceous species met in the region give, by factorial correspondence analysis, four plants groups: the group of Tephrosia pedicellata at Haffe Lour, which soil texture is dominated by the clay-muddy fraction and with a high rate of exchangeable base. We found the group of Ipomoea (I. pestigridis and I. Vagans) at Ngambou, with an important sandy fraction soils and a high rate of exchangeable base, the group of Hyptis suaveolens at Pete with sandy-clay-muddy texture soils and a weak cationic exchange capacity. We found the group of Panicum tenellum at Darou Miname on sandy-clay-muddy soils and a strong cationic exchange capacity (CEC).
