- W2980321623 abstract "In the last decade, worldwide initiatives have been developing and changing the research landscape in fields such as genetics and neuroimaging through collaborations. While the importance of pooling effort and resources is well understood, this approach is often overlooked in neuroimaging due to the perceived difficulties it entails. With this emphasis on multi-site studies and consortia growing, we aimed to establish the ease of use of consortia data and the possibilities for participation. First, we surveyed the types of studies currently contributing to the three largest neuroimaging consortia, namely the CHARGE, ENIGMA, and UNITED consortia. Second, we determined what kind of data is available for sharing within these neuroimaging consortia. Third, we obtained information on criteria for participating in these initiatives. The CHARGE, ENIGMA, and UNITED consortia include studies with various study designs (i.e. clinical trials, population-based cohort studies, case-control studies, and case-only studies) and sample sizes (ranging from 50 individuals to over 20.000 participants). We found that data from neuroimaging consortia can typically be grouped into “raw data” and “summary statistics”. Obtaining raw data (i.e. individual participant data) for re-analyses is sometimes possible, especially with the increasing accessibility to large publicly available samples. Restrictions typically apply to large cohort studies where informed consent prevents direct sharing of data, but alternative options are provided for gaining access. Summary statistics are generally available without restrictions. The consortia are all open to new studies joining ongoing efforts, with each consortia have a particular focus with regard to study design or population characteristics. In addition, researchers interested in applying (self-developed) methodologies are welcome to join, and industrial partnerships exists. Neuroimaging consortia are inclusive initiatives. There are many possibilities to leverage the data generated in these efforts and to become actively involved." @default.
