• W2980424998 abstract "Researchers worldwide develop decision support software for quantitative and statistical analysis or automatic classification of medical images to support physicians in the interpretation of a continuously increasing number of images. However, many software tools that were tested successfully in a research setting never enter clinical patient care. In part this is explained by the difficulty to test and validate software tools in everyday clinical routine due to practical problems to exchange image data between the clinical PACS and the software tool. To address these problems we developed and tested an easy-to-use and flexible decision support support system (d3s) for fast exchange of DICOM images between PACS and decision support software. d3s can support different software tools at the same time. Configuration for a given software tool includes specification of the number of DICOM images required by the tool and their type (according to DICOM series description). In addition, the user can predefine parameters not available from the DICOM header (e.g. tracer uptake time) to be provided interactively. The software tool is selected from a pull-down menu. Then d3s provides a GUI to search the PACS for the image data required by this tool. The GUI only lists data types according to the configuration for this software tool. The user selects the image data to be processed from the list. d3s first retrieves the selected images from the PACS to the local PC. Then it starts the software tool by providing the local path to the retrieved images and the additional parameters. Results of the tool are saved on the local PC. In addition, d3s can be configured to send DICOM images, raw images or pdf files generated by the software tool to the PACS. d3s was successfully tested with different software tools in clinical routine in several nuclear medicine and radiology departments for more than 24 months. The tests included support of a custom-made software tool for fully automatic documentation and voxel-based statistical testing of brain FDG-PET for the diagnosis of dementia. d3s is a useful tool to support evaluation of image analysis software prototypes in everyday clinical routine." @default.
