- W2980452548 abstract "In 2018, the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association published a research framework for preclinical Alzheimer's disease (pAD), the “diagnosis of AD with bio markers in a living person.” With pAD research being conducted around the world, hundreds of people are being informed that they are at an increased risk of developing a progressive disease for which, as of now, there is no cure. The psychosocial benefits of support groups should be considered. Utilizing descriptive analyses, we developed, implemented, and tracked a social worker-led pAD support group that met monthly. Inclusion criterion was a research diagnosis for pAD defined as normal cognition with elevated brain Aβ on PET scan or CSF. Thirty potential participants were invited to participate. A total of 11 group-sessions were held. Of the 30 people invited to attend the group, 11 attended one or more sessions. At the time of mailing invitations, attendees (age = 74.1, MMSE = 28.9, GDS = 1.09) and non-attendees (74.4y, MMSE = 28.8, 0.89) did not differ on age, global cognition, or Geriatric Depression Scale scores, ps > 0.71. Of those invited, 7 of 16 females (44%) and 4 of 14 males (29%) attended at least one session. Three invited-females were interested in attending but were unable to due to geographical boundaries. 3 of 7 females and 1 of 4 males had high group attendance. 2 of 7 females and 3 of 4 males had low attendance. 4 non-attendees had issues adhering to protocols of clinical trials they were enrolled in whereas none of the group attendees had adherence issues. This exploratory study suggests that females are more likely to attend a support group and group attendees have fewer issues with trial protocol adherence. Telehealth or hybrid formats should be evaluated in the future to include those unable to attend in-person. Further research is required to better understand motivation, benefit, and need of support groups for pAD, as clinical practice parameters evolve for this population. Future clinical trials should consider including a support group framework to meet the psychosocial and educational needs of subjects with pAD." @default.
