- W2980456980 abstract "Previous evidence has shown that temporal lobe epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibited similarities of clinical interest. In AD patients, the incidence of convulsive seizures was ten times higher than healthy controls. Furthermore, the cognitive decline started 5.5 years earlier in AD patients with epilepsy than AD controls. The present retrospective and exploratory study tested: (i) the prevalence of epileptiform activity in resting state eyes closed EEG (rsEEG) recordings in a group of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD (ADMCI); (ii) the different spatial and frequency features of the rsEEG rhythms in a group of ADMCI patients with epileptiform EEG activity (ADMCI epil+) compared to groups of ADMCI patients without epileptiform EEG activity (ADMCI epil-), patients with dementia due to AD (ADD), and healthy elderly subjects (Nold). We used the data of a national archive, formed by clinical, neuropsychological, and rsEEG data in 30 Nold, 42 ADMCI, and 30 ADD subjects. The epileptiform activities in the rsEEG data were detected in the ADMCI patients having long EEG recordings (about 30 minutes each). Individual alpha frequency peak (IAF) was used to determine the delta, theta, alpha1, alpha2, and alpha3 frequency band ranges. Fixed beta1, beta2, and gamma bands were considered. eLORETA estimated the rsEEG cortical sources in EEG segments free from artifacts and epileptiform activity. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROCC) classified these sources across individuals. Eleven out of 42 ADMCI subjects (26%) showed epileptiform EEG activity. Compared to the Nold group, the ADMCI epil-, ADMCI epil+ and ADD groups presented higher widespread delta source activities and lower posterior alpha source activities. As novel EEG results, compared to the ADMCI epil- group, the ADMCI epil+ unveiled higher frontal and temporal delta source activities (Figure 1). Furthermore, temporal delta source activity allowed good classification accuracies (ROCC > 0.85) between the ADMCI epil- and ADMCI epil+ individuals." @default.
