- W2980489311 abstract "This paper describes a geographical analysis of participants in the bridging program at the Whyalla campus of the University of South Australia. An industrial city of 25,000 on the eastern side of Spencer Gulf in South Australia, Whyalla is one of BHP's four Australian steelmaking cities in Australia. It is also host to the largest regional university campus in South Australia. In 1986 the university introduced a foundation program to its course profile at Whyalla as part of its alternative entry procedures. A post-code analysis of the participants reveals that the majority of participants come mainly from the two postcodes of Whyalla 5600 and Whyalla Norrie 5608. However there is a marked geographic divide within the city with most bridging students coming from the postcode with a lower socio-economic profile. Also most of these students are women. The study reveals that there are disproportionate responses from the community to the messages that the university sends into the community but also possibilities for change." @default.
