- W2980750806 abstract "At the turn of the 20th century in the United States, communicable diseases such as smallpox, measles, diphtheria, pertussis, and others took a significant annual toll on children and adults ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999 Centers for Disease Control and PreventionAchievements in public health, 1900–1999: Impact of vaccines universally recommended for children—United States, 1990–1998. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 1999; 48 (Retrieved from): 243-248https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00056803.htm PubMed Google Scholar ). Although the first smallpox vaccine was developed in the late 1700s based on Edward Jenner’s experiments with cowpox ( Greenwood, 2014 Greenwood B. The contribution of vaccination to global health: Past, present, and future. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. 2014; 369: 20130433https://doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2013.0433 Crossref PubMed Scopus (410) Google Scholar ), its use did not become widespread until the early 20th century. Around this time, other vaccines were developed, including those for pertussis in 1914, diphtheria in 1926, and tetanus in 1938, and their use became routinely recommended in the United States. These three vaccines were combined into the DTP vaccine in 1948 ( Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Vaccine Education Center, 2019 Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Vaccine Education CenterVaccine history: Developments by year. https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-history/developments-by-yearDate: 2019 Google Scholar ). The polio vaccine was licensed in 1955, and the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine was made available in 1971. The enormous success of a worldwide surveillance and vaccination initiative led to the 1980 declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) that smallpox had been eradicated in the world ( Fenner et al., 1988 Fenner F. Henderson D.A. Arita I. Jezek Z. Ladnyi I.D. Smallpox and its eradication. https://apps.who.int/iris/handle/10665/39485Date: 1988 Google Scholar ). The last known case of smallpox was recorded in the United States in 1949, and smallpox vaccination was no longer recommended after 1972 ( Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Vaccine Education Center, 2019 Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Vaccine Education CenterVaccine history: Developments by year. https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-history/developments-by-yearDate: 2019 Google Scholar )." @default.
