Cloth, xxi, 241 pp., $87.95. ISBN 978-1-4354-3854-5 www.cengage.com/delmar When a singer suffers vocal injury, it is often the voice teacher who recognizes the need for treatment. Finding a laryngologist who is sensitive to the needs of singers is the first step in treating the injury; ideally, rehabilitation also includes a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and a singing voice specialist (SVS). Voice teachers-because they are not medically trained-are often reluctant to be actively involved in rehabilitation, but their expertise in the singing voice makes them valuable participants in the process. Karen Wicklund, who is both a voice teacher and a speech-language pathologist, has written Singing Voice Rehabilitation as a resource for both voice pedagogues and SLPs. The book begins with an overview of the healthy voice. Color diagrams and photographs enhance detailed explanations of the systems for respiration, phonation/registration, resonance, and articulation. The author elucidates common voice disorders, and the psychosocial effects of singing voice loss. Even if the voice is rehabilitated, the singer may have to accept that it may have changed, and Wicklund enumerates coping strategies for this scenario. Often, singers who have experienced voice injury are stigmatized, for others may assume it was caused by misuse or abuse. Injured singers may hesitate to seek help, or rehabilitated singers may be reluctant to share their experiences. In Singing Voice Rehabilitation, Wicklund recounts her own challenges with two separate voice injuries: a contact granuloma caused by an intubation, and a vocal fold hemorrhage stemming from fever. Her recovery is a testimony to the importance of rehabilitation, while her frank discussion about the process is an excellent model of openness. The entire book is a useful tool for voice teachers, but the sections devoted to therapeutic voice exercises and song repertoire are particularly valuable. Wicklund presents specific vocalises for rehabilitation organized according to the systems of the healthy voice. Pedagogues who send students to SLPs often encounter confusion on the part of the injured singers because the exercises are not tailored to the singing voice. Wicklund deftly fills this gap with therapeutic vocalises in musical notation. Similarly, the suggested repertoire allows students to sing-in a non-injurious way-while recuperating. Both classical and music theater repertoire are included. For each song, the title, composer, and publisher are identified, as well as the key, range, tessitura, and incipit. In addition, the author delineates the criteria for songs that are appropriate for therapeutic purposes (including aspects of range, tessitura, intervals, volume, and articulation), thus encouraging voice teachers to explore additional song repertoire similar to the representative examples. …" @default.
