- W2981352962 abstract "Abstract Effects of low pH and catecholamines on afterpotentials of cardiac muscle fibers of the rabbit were examined using a conventional microelectrode technique in vitro . In the isolated right ventricular papillary muscle, delayed afterdepolarization fDAD) followed by afterhyperpolarization was evoked by repetitive stimulation in Tyrode’s solution at pH 7.1. The amplitude of DAD was dependent both on the interval of repetitive stimuli and the number of preceding stimuli. The DAD in some cases developed to a threshold level and triggered action potentials. Norepinephrine or isoproterenol at low concentrations (l-5pM) added into the low pH-Tyrode’s solution increased the amplitude of DADs and induced sustained rhythmic action potentials. Lowering pH of the solution to 6.7 depressed the DAD and inhibited triggered activity induced by catecholamines. The DAD induced by catecholamines was inhibited by propranolol, but not by verapamil or diltiazem. In hypoxic solution, DAD was not evoked by any means. The results indicate the possibility that a slight change in pH of the external fluid to 7.0 surrounding the myocardium and an increase in sympathetic activity would induce DAD, which, in turn, triggers sustained rhythmic activity in situ ." @default.
