- W2981392668 abstract "The key research questions for this book are not unique in the post-apartheid South African context. There is an emerging body of literature that focuses on how South African non-state actors have mobilized in the post-apartheid era, commandeered constitutional rights and helped achieve (or not) democratic and social transformation (see for example Ballard, Habib, and Valodia, 2006; Jones and Stokke, 2005; Moyo and Yeros, 2005; Langford et al., 2013; Berger, 2008; Wilson, 2011; Walker et al., 2010). However, it is true to say that power, as understood in this book, has not been an exclusive focus of this literature. Thus, this chapter also asks how non-state actors have been constrained in their human rights strategies, have challenged power structures and have managed to build countervailing power. Data collection and analysis for the three case studies were carried out between June 2009 and December 2010 and research methods entailed in-depth interviews, observation, focus groups and document analysis. The chapter begins in section 2 by sketching the political context of South Africa with a particular focus on the rights discourse and post-apartheid rise of organized civil society. Section 3 justifies the selection of the three organizations – Nkuzi Development Association (rural development), Abahlali baseMjondolo (urban social movement) and Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre (women’s rights organization) – by tracing their origins and briefly describing them. Sections 4 to 6 address the three main questions for the chapter and we conclude by arguing that rights-based strategies that acknowledge and mobilize all forms of power appear to have more sustained success in achieving social change, but that it is difficult to draw firm conclusions." @default.
