- W2981535628 abstract "Dryland rural livelihoods in many parts of Africa are increasingly understress as a result of dependency on seasonal unreliable weather for theirlabour-dependent agricultural production, and changes in the socialeconomiclandscape. Seasonal migration is a well-established strategy usedby these households to cope with shortfalls in food and income. Research todate has focused on rural-urban seasonal migration, despite rural-ruralseasonal migration also being an important activity. This study addresses thisgap in knowledge to better understand the role of rural-rural seasonalmigration in northern rural Ghana in supporting and transforming rurallivelihoods. The research examines (1) the factors influencing changing rurallivelihood dynamics in northern Ghana (2) the role of social networks inmediating the process and who benefits and (3) the impact of socioculturalfactors on gendered migration opportunities. The study uses an ethnographicledapproach, using in-depth interview, guided questions and participatoryfocus group activities to collect data with 200 respondents from twocommunities, Korro and Naawie in the Lambussie District of the Upper Westregion. While there are multiple drivers on migration, this study foundcultural identity and social status to be an important driver of seasonal ruralruralmigration because retaining traditional social identity remains areflection of a household’s ability to establish annual food security andperform locally important cultural functions within the community. Thisaspect has been undervalued in other migration studies. Both bonding andbridging social networks are used in the migration process, however, theyviiboth yield different outcomes. This finding challenge existing understandingthat assumes one form of social network will be more significant infacilitating migration. Differentiated outcomes can be explained by theadoption of particular approaches, and in this example three distinctmigration activities of cash labour, and charcoal production werecharacterised for different groups. One group excluded from theopportunities were found to be married women, due to local patriarchal andsocial norms. Yet a few had successfully navigated this challenge and thestudy explored this gendered and intra-household aspect. The insights fromthe study highlight the vital role that rural-rural seasonal migration plays forrural livelihood diversification, shifting livelihoods beyond simply coping tobeing able to adapt and reframing their livelihood trajectories, and how themechanisms of migration reinforce social identity. Greater attention andsupport should be given to the contribution of rural-rural seasonal migrationto transformation in rural societies, and particular consideration still needs tobe given to generating equality in gender participation as a mechanism forwomen’s empowerment." @default.
