- W2981909871 abstract "Abstract The neuroendocrine system is critical for maternal adaptation during pregnancy. However, the major players are different during ovulation, pregnancy, and lactation. For ovulation, the maternal kisspeptin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuron network is the vital central regulator to initiate a cascade of hormonal secretion and to induce follicle maturation and ovulation. During pregnancy, the maternal kisspeptin-GnRH pathway is suppressed, while placental secretion of kisspeptin and GnRH acts in a paracrine manner to ensure implantation and evolution of the pregnancy. While peripherally produced oxytocin seems to be more important for the contractility of myometrium during parturition, maternal hypothalamic oxytocin is more involved in lactation. Finally, a number of mechanisms inhibit maternal hypothalamic Kisspeptin-GnRH neuron system during lactation to induce the oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea during breastfeeding." @default.
