- W2982302360 abstract "Walter Pater’s contemporaries embraced the references to the visual medium in the term “imaginary portrait.” Like Pater, Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier was concerned with the solitary figure and interested in the blurred boundaries between the individual and the type. If genre painting lurks in the background of Pater’s portraits, so do other pictorial genres, such as history painting and landscapes. Among contemporary reviewers G. E. Woodberry accused Pater of drowning his subjects in historical and picturesque detail, as they “portray rather the times in which the scene of them is laid than the individuals who figure in them. Unlike the classical Theophrastan character type, which had a revival in mid Victorian fiction, there is an almost total absence of physiognomical descriptions of Pater’s characters. The observant eyes in the painting become those of Pater’s narrator, who constitutes the reader’s eyes throughout, never for a moment challenged by a rivalling point of view." @default.
