- W2982837108 abstract "The agribusiness is one of the most important commercial activities in Brazil and corresponds to the economic basis of North and Northeast regions, generating employment and income, especially concerning fruits and its derivative sector. This sector attends the internal and international markets. Açai (Euterpe oleracea), acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC), cajá (Spondias monbim), cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale, L), cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum), guaraná (Paullinia cupana), guava (Psidium guajava L), tamarind (Tamarindus indica), and pupunha (Bactris gasipaes) correspond to the most consumed typical North–Northeast fruits in natura or processed. The negative impact of the intense agro-industry production is the generation of many processing by-products that directly affects people and environment alike due to its inappropriate management. The agro-industrial by-products are organic materials consisting of considerable levels of bioactive compounds that can improve health quality. Within this context, research has intensified to identify the biological and physiological potential of these by-products to increase their use. A relatively low cost and rich bioactive content makes these by-products an attractive source of raw materials in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Current problems due to inappropriate by-product management can be transformed into consumer's benefits, especially in North–Northeast of Brazil, with large and varied fruit production. Increased by-product use can ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly fruit processing." @default.
