Successful or useful results were achieved in 85% after grafting of isolated lesions. The strength was statistically better when patients had grafting of the axillary nerve within 5.3 months from the time of injury. The dramatic decrease in the rate of success seen with longer delays suggests that surgery should be undertaken within three months of injury. A statistically significant downward trend of the rate of success was noted with increasing age. The force and level of injury to the shoulder play an important role in the type, combination and level of nerve damage and the incidence of associated rotator-cuff, vascular and other injuries to the upper limb. Management of isolated and combined lesions of the axillary nerve after injury to the shoulder needs to be thorough and systematic.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByTransdeltoid Approach to Axillary Nerve Repair: Anatomical Study and Case SeriesThe Journal of Hand Surgery, Vol. 4Adult Brachial Plexus Injuries: Determinants of Treatment (Timing, Injury Type, Injury Pattern)3 July 2021Anterior Approach for Axillary Nerve Reconstruction3 July 2021Isolated Axillary Nerve Injury in an Elite High School American Football Player: A Case Report4 September 2019 | Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Vol. 11, No. 6Traumatic Brachial Plexopathy in AthletesJournal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Vol. 27, No. 18Axillary Nerve ReconstructionTechniques in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery, Vol. 19, No. 4Nerve transfers for treatment of isolated axillary nerve injuries1 May 2015 | Plastic Surgery, Vol. 23, No. 2Triceps motor branch transfer for isolated traumatic pediatric axillary nerve injuriesJournal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, Vol. 15, No. 1The Subscapularis Splitting TechniqueTechniques in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, Vol. 15, No. 4Radial to axillary nerve neurotization for brachial plexus injury in children: a combined case seriesJournal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, Vol. 14, No. 5Nerve lesions and entrapment neuropathies of the upper limbInjuries of the terminal branches of the infraclavicular brachial plexusPatterns of injury, management and outcomeT.
