- W298302016 abstract "Age-dependent changes in “bigger” and “more” judgments are studied in this chapter. Such changes may be caused by modification in word meaning and in the abilities to estimate quantity. An analysis of the concept of size shows that the concept is unsuitable for a one-step assignment. However, specific aspects of a “bigger” object can easily be grasped in perception, thus forming the initial word meaning. Subsequently a more detailed analysis leads to adjustments which at first remain incomplete. The resulting incomplete lexical entries are of interest in evaluating specific theories both of word meaning and of the acquisition of word meaning. Changes in “more” judgments are parallel to those in “bigger” judgments, but the time sequence is somewhat different. The two phenomena are interdependent in a variety of ways; conclusions about this can be drawn from combinations of “bigger” and “more” judgments. The available data suggest that, because of connections between lexical items, changes in “more” judgments are a consequence of semantic changes in “bigger”. Such an interpretation, which does not have recourse to changes in quantity estimation, is in good agreement with Bower's theory of development, according to which the language system dominates the sensorimotor one whenever the two systems yield discrepant results." @default.
