- W298391010 abstract "The respiratory tract and lungs are part of a complex organ system, the cardiorespiratory system, designed to facilitate the exchange of gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, maintain acid–base and electrolyte imbalance, and serve as an important mechanism for filtering potentially harmful environmental materials. Respirable-size particulate matter, from environmental or industrial exposure, can induce the expression of inflammatory mediators in various cell types of the lung. Previous studies have shown that a variety of particulate stresses can activate inflammatory signaling pathways that operate through specific transcription factors, including activator protein (AP)-1 and nuclear factor (NF)-κB, known to regulate inflammatory gene expression. In the context of this chapter, the focus will be on the inflammatory interactions of inhaled particulate matter on the tissues of the respiratory tract as well as how these interactions may be used to understand respiratory allergy and the respective inflammatory processes that occur following inhalation of a respiratory allergen. Pulmonary inflammation, resulting from such exposures, has been studied in a variety of different models. These research models (in vivo, in vitro, and in silico), may also provide mechanistic details by which to study dysregulated tissue repair and carcinogenesis, both potential outcomes of an inflammatory response in the respiratory system." @default.
