- W298507316 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the automatic oxygen and acid–base control during organ perfusion as a model for extracorporeal circulation. In an oxygenator, blood is brought into contact with a gas containing a high partial oxygen pressure. The oxygen transfer can be changed by varying the oxygen gradient between gas and blood or by changing the blood flow rate through the oxygenator. The arterial oxygen tension is measured between the reservoir and the organ. The measured value is fed into the preset controller. The output signal of the controller regulates the speed of the pump in the oxygenation circuit. An increase of the blood flow causes a higher P O 2 of the blood in the reservoir. During organ perfusion or extracorporeal circulation metabolic acidosis can be expected. This means that base excess (BE) is always negative and that hydrogen ions have to be buffered. This can be done by infusion of a hydrogen buffer into the blood. To obtain a good buffer regulation, the BE has to be calculated. For this calculation one need four variables, including pH, PCO2, hemoglobin concentration, and oxygen saturation. These parameters are fed into an analog computer which calculates the BE." @default.
