- W2988891288 abstract "In the last decade, mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) have gained much attention due to their unique bone regenerative properties and excellent properties as local drug-delivery systems in bone. The incorporation of therapeutic agents inside the mesopores provides the capability to release active compounds against bone diseases such as osteoporosis, tumors, or infections. In addition, MBGs can contain dopant ions, which are able to promote angiogenesis and antibacterial effects through the local release. Composites based on MBGs as discrete phase in combination with polymers allow exploring new therapeutic approaches for bone regeneration purposes. Polymer–MBG composites have demonstrated excellent rheological properties to be manufactured by rapid prototyping manufacture techniques, which give rise to MBGs with 3D macroporous architectures. The combination of the features at the nanoscale with the design at the macroscopic level results in excellent biological responses, such as osteoinduction, osteoconductivity, and osteostimulation properties. Finally, the design of smart hybrid materials can be achieved through the functionalization of MBGs with stimuli-responsive moieties, thus providing an efficient tool for the design of on-demand localized drug-delivery systems. In this chapter the advantages and limitations of MBGs as inorganic matrixes for biomedical composites are reviewed and critically discussed." @default.
