- W298889712 abstract "For a long time, we have known that writing is imFor portant for all students, and we have been concerned that there is not enough writing in our schools. In recent years, there has emerged more and more evidence-on national, state, and local levels-that students cannot write as well as they should. Perhaps the underlying cause of the writing problem is that educators have not been recognizing the power of writing to promote thinking skills and therefore have not known how important it is. Fortunately, this is changing. In recent years, researchers such as Graves (1983) have shown that writing is a thinking process and that writing helps students learn. Researchers have proven that writing promotes long-term retention of subject matter content much more effectively than drill and study sheets (Pearce 1984). We can no longer think of writing as only a means of communication; we must think of writing as a means of deciding what we think. We have made much progress in improving the basic skills of all students. By basic skills we mean basic reading comprehension and math computation skills. Now we need to improve the higher order thinking skills, and writing is one of the most effective tools for accomplishing that purpose (Nyberg and Egan 1981). Writing is the means by which we can move more from effectiveness to excellence. Writing is both a basic skill and a higher order skill. Administrative Support for School Writing Programs" @default.
