- W2989716486 abstract "Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a very prevalent and easily treatable condition. Studies indicate a low rate of adherence to standard treatment - continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)- influenced by factors associated with the patient and CPAP itself (air leakage, discomfort, mucosal dryness, among others). Objectives: determine the influence of factors external to the patient and CPAP on adherence to treatment. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 100 patients with OSAS. They were stratified into two groups: Group A met criteria for adherence to CPAP (use> 4h in ≥70% of nights); Group B - no adherence. A questionnaire was conducted through telephone contact, which evaluated the influence of spouse’s complaints, frequent trips and shift work on adherence to CPAP. Results: Of the 100 patients (61% males, mean age 64.6, mean body mass index 31.5), 49% weren’t adherent to treatment. In comparison with group A, group B had more individuals working in shifts (7%vs2%), had more complaints from the spouses regarding noise and air leakage (45%vs27%), and had more individuals traveling frequently (21%vs5%). Conclusion: Some of these factors influence adherence to CPAP, with a statistically significant value (spouse’s complaints, p=0.018; and travel frequently, p=0.025). Working shifts had an influence on adherence, but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05), however, we have to take into account the small size of the sample, so it is possible that these values are underestimated. It is important to sensitize not only the patient, but also the patient’s spouse of the importance of adherence to CPAP including travel times and all periods of sleep whether at night or day." @default.
