- W2990156146 abstract "Abstract This chapter examines the construction of pangolins as exotic animals in natural history in early modern Europe (16th–18th centuries). It details accounts of the first encounters with pangolins in Africa and Asia by Europeans, including the varied identities they were given in the field, such as quogelo or the devil of Taiwan. It explores their inclusion in European curiosity collections as ambiguous skins and their depiction in natural history publications and taxonomies. Pangolins, or “scaly lizards”, challenged traditional European ways of seeing the world. They were constructed by European naturalists as valuable symbolic entities: like armadillos from the West Indies, pangolins were liminal beasts on the Great Chain of Being, intermediate forms between reptiles and mammals. They took on biogeographical and political associations, especially in fraught colonial locations, which became embodied in their dichotomous characterization as both fearsome, armored beasts and innocent, vulnerable creatures." @default.
