- W2990200318 abstract "Abstract The resident microbial communities that inhabit the bodies of humans and other animals have emerged as important modulators of health and disease. Elucidating the mechanisms through which animals and microbes interact and what determines the outcome of their relationships has become the subject of intense biomedical research. However, the complex and dynamic nature of many animal–microbe associations is difficult to capture and recapitulate using mouse or tissue culture-based models alone. In this chapter, we will describe what makes the zebrafish, Danio rerio, an attractive alternative animal model for investigating animal–microbe interactions. The zebrafish is a unique animal model because it combines conserved vertebrate physiology with a small, rapidly developing, and transparent body plan. These attributes enable tightly controlled, high-throughput experimental schemes for dissecting animal–interactions across a range of spatial and temporal scales. We conclude by highlighting several studies that illustrate the potential of the zebrafish to both forge and overturn paradigms in animal–microbe interaction research." @default.
