- W2990389892 abstract "Introduction: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels generated by household characteristics, indoor activities and outdoor sources have been reported to influence the indoor air quality and result in adverse health outcomes. Methods: Houses (n=300) belonging to participants in the Mother and Child in the Environment (MACE) birth cohort were randomly selected. A structured walk-through to identify the house characteristics, indoor activities and outdoor sources likely to generate PM2.5 was conducted. Mini-Vol samplers were used to monitor PM2.5 for a period of 24 hours, followed by a post activity questionnaire. Factor analysis was used as a variable reduction tool and five factors were retained and used with three original variables excluded by factor analysis in linear regression models. Apparent and 2/3 holds validation and leave one out cross validation (LOOCV) were used to validate the models. Results: A reasonably robust model was obtained: the model R2 for apparent and 2/3 holds validation and LOOCV was 50%, 48%, 52% respectively, with a high correlation between predicted and observed levels for all methods. The predictor variables were significant, an increase in factor scores for crowding, household emissions, and smoking practices respectively increased the PM2.5 levels (p<0.05) and a decrease in factor scores of room magnitude and natural ventilation respectively decreased the PM2.5 levels (p<0.05). The original variables showed that PM2.5 levels in the south were higher than in the north. Houses using electricity had lower levels compared to houses using paraffin or gas and houses situated in >1.6km from major roads had lower levels compared to houses situated in <1.6km (p<0.05). Conclusion: Recognizing the challenges in characterizing exposure in environmental health studies, modelling provides an opportunity to reasonably estimate pollutant levels in unmeasured homes. A meaningfully representative model was possible using regression and factor analysis." @default.
