His expertise in ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry and biomonitoring assists with the optimization of impact assessment programs and in the understanding of the causes of biological detriment from physicochemical alterations. He is accomplished at the sampling of metals in waters to low part per trillion levels.Search for more papers by this authorPublished Online:24 Feb 2014https://doi.org/10.4155/ebo.13.477AboutSectionsView ArticleView Full TextPDF/EPUB ToolsAdd to favoritesDownload CitationsTrack Citations ShareShare onFacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditEmail View chapterAbstract: The principles of quality assurance and quality control in mine wastewater and associated surface water monitoring do not differ from those of other types of water monitoring, but implementation can be particularly challenging in practice. The challenges come from the nature of mine sites as large industrial complexes that are often remote from other infrastructure, together with the climate and other characteristics of mine locations, human resource limitations characteristic of the operating environment of mines, and from the fact that mines occur in areas enriched in the substances being mined. The generally substantial time of life of a mine, coupled with a generally high turnover of staff at mine sites, also makes management of quality assurance in monitoring difficult. These issues can all be managed, but do require careful planning and regular review of the monitoring data and their quality. Consistently achieving this over the life of the mine can be the biggest challenge. References1 US EPA. Background for NEPA Reviewers: Non-Coal Mining Operations.
