• W2990784999 abstract "INTRODUCTION: After the Fukushima–Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster, thyroid ultrasound examination (TUE) has been performed in subjects who were aged ≤18 years. In the 1st round TUE (October 2011 to March 2014), 113 malignancies (including suspicious cases, malignancies, hereafter) were detected. Beside malignancies, 2,293 nodules with diameter ≤5 mm and 1,244 with nodules larger than 5mm were detected among 300,476 participants. In the ongoing 2nd round TUE (April 2014 to March 2016), additional 51 malignancies, 1,554 nodules with diameter ≤5 mm and 2,606 with nodules larger than 5mm were detected among 219,356 participants as of December 2015. METHODS: This study examined the relationship between radiation dose and the number of participants with thyroid malignancy or nodules, using publicly available municipality level data (N=59). Poisson regression was applied to that data with UNSCEAR estimated thyroid dose, average age at exposure, and average age at screening as explanatory variables. RESULTS: In spite of the UNSCEAR thyroid dose was insignificant for malignancies for both the 1st (β=18.60, 95%CI=[-10.0,47.29]) and for the 2nd round TUE (β=11.23, 95%CI=[-33.6,56.08]), it was positive and significant for smaller nodules both the 1st (β=16.12, 95%CI=[9.20, 23.05]) and for the 2nd round TUE (β=11.59, 95%CI=[5.41,17.78]). It was also significant for larger nodule both for the 1st (β=10.77, 95%CI=[1.31, 20.23]) and for the 2nd round TUE (β=29.65, 95%CI=[19.46,39.83]). Conclusions: Although this was an ecological study at the municipality level, our results are consistent with previous studies that confirm significant relationships with radiation exposure and prevalence of nodule. According to follow up studies of a-bomb and Chernobyl, nodule group has larger risk of later incidents of thyroid cancer. Our results might indicate an early warning for future incidence of thyroid cancer. Health follow-up for children in Fukushima is necessary." @default.
