- W2991163198 abstract "’Tragic theology’ recognizes both the deep mystery of evil and suffering in the contingencies of everyday life and the depth of alienation and forsakenness in the death of Christ, insisting that both realities resist solace and resolution. The deaths of Cordelia and Lear in Shakespeare’s King Lear, for example, offer a paradigm of ’looking’ clearly at these tragic events. Such a theology has, however, been challenged on several grounds. First, it may be objected that the term ’tragedy’ has slipped from describing an art-form to referring to the miseries of daily life. Second, it may be said that Christianity is an ’anti-tragic’ vision of the world in the light of resurrection and new creation in the Christian story. This essay argues that a tragic theology is possible despite these objections, but it will be based on the Shakespearean form of tragedy, in which a protagonist is in tension with society, rather than on the Greek tradition. Bringing the Christian story of the crucifixion and resurrection into analogous relation with Shakespeare’s type of tragedy leads to the proposal that tragedy as a work of art approximates to tragedy in everyday life, while offering consolations which do not undermine the seriousness of particular human suffering." @default.
