- W2991291673 abstract "Over the past decade, mobile payments have received considerable attention as they are increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to traditional payment systems. However, despite the enormous potential of this technology, the uptake has been slower than expected. In fact, cash is still king in many economies, accounting for up to 90% of all payments in some developing countries. As such, it is increasingly important to understand the determinants of mobile payment acceptance. In this regard, the present study presents a model that focuses on understanding the role of emotions (i.e. affect, anticipated regret, and anxiety) in the acceptance of mobile payment systems. The affective components in the model were drawn from two theories: the social-cognitive theory (SCT) and the regret theory. Using a sample of 325 survey responses from South Africa, the study showed that affect and anticipated regret had a significant positive influence on behavioral intentions to adopt mobile payments, while the influence of anxiety was not significant. The study provides several practical and theoretical implications, especially as the role of emotions in mobile payment acceptance has been widely understudied." @default.
