- W299157066 abstract "In this chapter the point is made that in taking the initiative to rethink its scientific status and position, information science finds itself on the threshold of a new life or dispensation. What is required is imaginative thinking outside the boundaries and limitations of its ‘standard’ and ‘standardised’ approach as made applicable and enforced in all the subdisciplines. The whole subject field must be rethought in an effort to overcome the crisis in which it finds itself regarding human meaning and human existence. This rethinking requires a new set of parameters of borrowed conceptual equipment. It will be necessary to articulate in a sensible way the impact of the information explosion on individuals and societies. It will not be fruitful to borrow interpretation, for example, on a shallow and limited scale without taking seriously the whole rich field of interpretation theory and all the problematic aspects related to it. Mere content analysis is inadequate. The new conceptual equipment will empower us to think differently and in new terms about our scientific endeavour. We have to go beyond our established views (the post-scientific position) in order to achieve a solid and really fruitful interrelatedness between information science, information theory, information practice and the information profession for the sake of the fullness of human meaning to be achieved in societal and individual human lives. This requires wisdom at the highest level of multiple connective intellection and calls for compositional thinking at full strength. No scientific endeavour, apart from information science, is as potentially equipped for this as information science, but on the condition that we are willing and enthusiastic about equipping ourselves to the utmost for this commendable alternative." @default.
