Given the seriousness of these claims and the volume of resources currently being poured into its promotion, these claims cannot be left unchallenged and need to be critically investigated with due consideration to its historical context. This article details the early history and brief flowering of the code in South Africa from the mid- to late- 1890s to the end of World War I.
