- W2992916013 abstract "With a site license that installs Maple V mathematical computation software from Waterloo Maple Software Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on virtually any hardware platform on campus, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has been able to make computer algebra as common as word processing and spreadsheets. Faculty members, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students all have access to symbolic computing. Plus improvements made to the program's interface have attracted many additional users the last year alone. * Teaching the Basics All first-year students are required to take Computing Skills Workshop (CSW) either the fall or spring semester. Small classes of no more than 20 students meet once each week for an introduction to the array of computer activities that will continue to be part of their educational experience. The course covers both distributed computing and personal computing: the basics of the operating system, editing and document production, some form of mathematical manipulation and network resources. This strategy has proven effective for assuring a basic, common level of experience among all students. In the spring of 1991, Maple V was introduced CSW to all students the engineering college. The session introduced a handful of numeric, algebraic and graphical commands, then verified that students understood how to work their way through Maple's extensive help facilities. Students were excited about seeing features the program that were related to terminology they had noticed when browsing ahead their textbooks. They could see how the package would be useful to We need only introduce [Maple] ... then let it continue teaching the students after their brief session CSW, says Carol Scheftic, lecturer for CMU's mathematics department. Many more students will be introduced to the program, including all first-year undergraduates engineering, science, humanities and social science, industrial management and even architects the fine arts. * Meaningful Exploration Maple was used experimentally a calculus section attended by science and engineering students the spring semester of 1991. In this course, Calculus with Linear Algebra, Maple V runs on DEC 3100 workstations. At its most basic, Maple permits students to type the expressions from a typical homework problem and see the result when the answer is not among those given the back of the textbook. In many additional situations, tools are provided to easily check intermediate steps. Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, Maple permits the student to compare and contrast the algebraic, numeric and graphical representations of a problem. For example, Scheftic explains, in studying Taylor polynomials, we covered both how to compute the required expressions and how to plot them. Armed with the plots, she and her students examined the radius of convergence, the effect of the number of terms used, the order of magnitude of the error term, and characteristics of the specific terms that appeared. While students using Maple were not necessarily better at doing the hand calculations to produce a given polynomial the first place, they were much better at interpreting what they had found and detecting when an error had led them astray. Says one student: Teachers have always told me to check my answers, but using Maple has finally enabled me to see how useful this can be. When studying differential equations, a standard recitation would involve working out several different problems at the chalkboard. With Maple, the teacher could demonstrate one by hand, and either precede or follow that with having Maple solve a family of similar problems, noting how seemingly minor changes the original expression would affect the outcome. …" @default.
