Chinese cabbage is a valuable antioxidant-rich food crop. However, the response of antioxidant system to phenotypic variation caused by rapidly increasing biomass and leaf surface has not been studied critically. At the present study we investigated enzymatic antioxidant activity in Brassica chinensis plants grown under multipurpose compost fertilization from seeds treated with plant growth regulator Amir. SOD activity decreased in plants with higher productivity. APX activity and GPX activity in plants was higher under multipurpose compost fertilization than in controls. We observed higher biomass productivity in plants raised from seeds treated with water and ‘Amir’ growth regulator applied alone or in combination with using multipurpose compost compared to the control. Plant biomass increased significantly in plants grown from seeds pre-soaked with Amir growth regulator under multipurpose compost fertilization. The effect of all the treatments on SOD activity was not significant. In contrast, all treated plants showed a significantly higher APX activity. Both the pre-sowing seed treatment with water and Amir and application of multipurpose compost decreased GPX activity in plant leaves. GPX activity increased in plants from Amir treated seeds with further applying of multipurpose compost. It can be concluded that increase in photosynthetic activity in organically fertilized Chinese cabbage plants or plants raised from Amir treated seeds not only enhance biomass productivity, but also induces non-specific oxidative stress." @default.
