- W2993757201 abstract "Your client has finally made it through the paperwork; their resume and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities statement has been rated and ranked and been determined to be among the best qualified. They have been notified about an upcoming interview and have contacted you for advice. Now what? While there are many similarities between federal and private sector interviews, there are some unique aspects of federal interviewing that you should know so that you can prepare your client. Structured Interviews Used In the federal government, all job interviews are structured; each interviewee is asked the same questions in the same order. And, all questions are job related, consistent with the Uniform Guidelines for Employee Selection. While follow up questions may be asked for additional clarification, in most instances, questions are identical for each candidate and the candidate may feel that the interview is rigid and inflexible. This consistency is critical from the federal government's standpoint, in order to minimize the opportunity and risk of legal challenges to the process. Notes are typically taken during the interview and interviews are evaluated, often using predetermined measures. Although interviewing in the federal government is quite structured, there are many things your client can do to help make him or herself stand out from the competition. Preparation is Key Like interviewing for positions in the private sector, applicants interviewing for positions in the federal government should be prepared. Before the interview, candidates should review the agency's web site, including the strategic plan, to ensure that they understand the agency's mission and goals. Every agency must have a strategic plan. That plan is posted on its web site and is accessible to the public. Candidates should also spend some time learning about the customer the agency serves. This will help the candidate frame stronger responses to questions and demonstrate a broader knowledge and understanding of the agency and its mission. Agencies are interested in applicants who understand the agency and its customers, and how an applicant can help the agency accomplish its mission. Applicants who do not demonstrate that they know something about an agency or its mission do not get very far in the process. In addition to reviewing general agency information, applicants should review the vacancy announcement again carefully to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities of the position. All agencies follow the Uniform Guidelines for Employee Selection. The Guidelines establish a set a principles for determining fairness in all parts of the recruitment and selection process, from determining the knowledge, skills and abilities required for a particular job, to how the experience or education from resumes is evaluated, to the interview questions asked. Analyzing the job and type of position is critical to preparing for the interview as all interview questions will likely be job related and consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities identified in the announcement. The knowledge, skills and abilities which have been identified are considered essential to successful job performance. Additional information about the job, typical experience and qualifications and duties (in addition to those listed in me announcement) can be found in the Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions Handbook, http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/index.asp, and the Federal Positions Classification Standards, http://www.opm.gov/fedclass/ index.asp. This information is listed by job series, the two, three or four digit code listed on the announcement. Examples of common job series include 301, 343, 1801, 2001 and 1102. Job series are typically shown as GS-301-7 (General Schedule pay plan, series 301, grade 7) or SV-1801-F (SV pay plan, series 1801, grade F). If possible, applicants should also consider requesting a copy of the position description for the job. …" @default.
