- W2994171337 abstract "The prevalence of diarrhoeic agents amongst hospitalised children in some hospitals in Calabar, Nigeria was studied. Stool samples were analyzed using standard microbiological and parasitological techniques. Antibiogram of the bacteria was tested using the agar-disc diffusion method. The results revealed that 46.75% of patients were infected with one or more bacteria species while 41.56% were infected with parasites while 11.69% of patients were co-infected with bacteria and parasites. The prevalence of bacteria was E. coli (18.18%), Salmonella typhi (9.09%), V. cholerae (3.90%), Shigella flexneri (5.20%), Proteus mirabilis (7.79%) and Providencia alcalifaciens (2.60%). The parasites identified were A. lumbricoides (10.39%), E. histolytica (15.58%), G. lamblia (7.79%) and S. stercoralis (7.79%). There was significant difference (p 0.05) in bacterial prevalence. The over 42% prevalence of positive minor-infections and the 11.69% prevalence of co-infections are of public health concern to avert outbreak of diarrhoeal epidemic. All bacterial isolates were sensitive to Nalidixic acid and Ceporex with only 14.29% of Salmonella typhi resistant to Ceporex. The prevalence of these diarrhoeic agents was high in children of less than five (5) years of age. UCTH had the highest prevalence of bacteria and Madona clinic had the highest parasite distribution. The public health implications of these findings have been highlighted in this paper. Keywords: Prevalence, epidemiology, infantile diarrhoea, antibiogram." @default.
