- W2994181275 abstract "One of the goals of the national Goals 2000 program is that[American] students will ... demonstrate competency in challenging subject matter ...; and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for citizenship, further learning, and employment in our modern economy American School Counseling Association,1996 In order to help accomplish this goal, school counselors can use preventative and developmental counseling approaches to foster students' social, emotional, and cognitive growth and to provide students with the life skills they need to make positive contributions to society. Rather than relying on traditional didactic methods of teaching those character traits and life skills identified as leading to responsible citizenship and productive employment, counselors can provide opportunities for students to learn through experience. John Dewey encompassed the philosophy that children learn responsibility and reliability by participating in their own learning and applying formal learning to real world experiences (cited in Foster-Harrison, 1995, p. 103). Peer helper programs provide opportunities for students to learn about, practice, and reflect on behaviors associated with these concepts. THE SOS CLUB A response to meeting these challenges is the SOS (Serve Our School) Club, a peer helper program developed by a part-time counselor in a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school with approximately 300 students. The goals, process, and methods of evaluation of this program are outlined below. The SOS Club is a program in which students are given the opportunity to provide services to the school community. All fifth grade students are targeted for this program because they are the oldest students in the school and are, therefore, in a natural position of leadership. While similar programs offer these opportunities as a reward for academic or behavioral performance, the SOS Club is based on the concept that each student has something positive to offer the school community as well as a responsibility to provide that service. Fifth grade students provide a service through the peer helper roles of student assistant or cross-age tutor. Student assistants work directly with school staff as they carry out their responsibilities. Through their assistance to staff, the students indirectly affect other students and the school environment (Myrick & Bowman, 1991). Examples of student assistants in the SOS Club are safety patrol, custodial assistant, and breakfast assistant. Cross-age tutors are students who work directly with younger students to enhance academic performance. This program provides students with opportunities to learn leadership skills by focusing on these positive character traits and life skills: responsibility, respect, honesty, fairness, caring, citizenship, courage, self-discipline, empathy, self-evaluation, and problem solving. Not only are these students exposed to the definitions of these terms, but also they perform the behaviors associated with these concepts, thus turning abstract definitions into real experiences. Goals and Objectives The SOS Club program provides opportunities for social, emotional, and cognitive growth for all fifth grade students as they provide services that positively affect the entire school community. The idea for the SOS Club program developed as a means to address various, seemingly unrelated, needs at school. These needs were identified over a period of time through conversations with other staff members. For instance, one problem noted was that in the morning, many of our students were wandering the halls unsupervised and teachers were frustrated that they could not perform their morning duties and keep track of all their students.Another problem frequently brought up in staff meetings was the need for more volunteers to work with students one-on-one or in small groups to help with reading skills. …" @default.
