- W2994243587 abstract "My first experience with computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) programs left me unimpressed. Running on minicomputers, computers, such systems were both too expensive for classroom use (especially with lab classes of ten or more participants) and too difficult for many of my junior-college engineering and drafting students. They found drawing by hand easier to master. Then the college phased out the minicomputers in favor of IBM-compatible micros. A low-cost package, Generic CADD, has proved to be well suited to our needs and is now used to train students. In fact, the discovery of this program reminded me of the first time I tried a hand-held calculator: No one had to convince me it was time to give up the slide rule. Aside from my teaching responsibilities, I am also a consultant to small engineering and construction firms. Once familiar with the software, I drew a set of commonly used items that were specific to each type of application (such as electrical wiring) and saved them as reusable components. I then wrote a series of custom menus to replace the program's standard menu. Instead of just being a list of available Generic CADD commands, my new menus also show available components and macro commands. Menus Reduce Learning Curve My customized menus employ the same terminology that builders and other professionals in the industry use. I have developed custom menus for architectural (the most popular), industrial electrical, mechanical and electronic schematic applications. Because the revised menus use standard industry terms, contractors have been able to work with the customized CADD program after only minimal training. Noticing how easily my clients got up and running, it occurred to me that customised menus could be a great help in training those Students preparing to work in these same fields. I decided to test the idea. One of my drafting classes had just finished studying industrial electricity and had completed a B size wiring diagram on a drafting machine in a four-hour exercise. They now understood the ladder logic between the motor and the control switches and contacts on the drawing. At this point I introduced them to the CADD software for the first time, then loaded my customized industrial-clectrical menu. Immediately they recognized, on my menu, the same terms that were on the drawing they had just completed manually. As they used these terms from the menu to get the correct symbols to display on the computer screen, I saw that using the custom menus reinforced their learning of the terminology. After only 30 minutes of instruction in the use of Generic CADD with the customized menus, students were able to reproduce the original drawing in three hours, this time by computer. implementing these menus has also helped my students learn to use nominal sizes. The customized menus supply students with the actual sizes to scale, which allows them to measure and check their work. My architectural menu system is typical of how custom CADD menus can be organized. Menus are divided into three basic parts: plan views, elevation views and wall sections. Additionally, the menus are organized in the sequential order needed to build a house. For example, selecting the menu WALL SECTION brings up the following choices: FOOTER, FOUNDATION WALL, FRAME FLOOR, FRAME WALL, FRAME ROOF and TRIM. …" @default.
