• W2994642557 abstract "Stable coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease represent an increasing burden, considering the aging of our population and the use of more effective treatments of acute events, which increase the number of survivors after an acute coronary syndrome. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiology of stable coronary artery disease and of peripheral artery disease in Portugal, namely the determinants/risk factors, incidence, prevalence and mortality. A systematic review of the literature was performed through search in Pubmed®, ISI Web of Knowledge® and IndexRMP, from inception to 31st of December 2018, to identify original studies reporting on the determinants/risk factors, incidence, prevalence and mortality of stable coronary artery disease and/or peripheral artery disease. Only those evaluating samples from the general population were included. Results: Seven studies with data from the general population were identified. A stable coronary artery disease prevalence of around 8% in the adult population and a peripheral artery disease prevalence of 5.9% in adults above 50 years old were observed. Stable coronary artery disease prevalence based on self-reported previous history of angina pectoris was higher: 11.1%. In Portugal, according to these estimates, there were about 622494 patients above 45-50 years old living with stable coronary artery disease and/or peripheral artery disease in 2017. Prevalence estimates stratified by age, sex or risk factors were not found. Studies with information on the determinants, incidence or mortality of patients with stable coronary artery disease and/or peripheral artery disease in the general population were also not available. This work identified a gap in research regarding the epidemiology of stable coronary artery disease and of peripheral artery disease at the national level. Lack of stratified data and other comparability limitations hinder definitive conclusions about the existence of true or artefactual variations in the prevalence of these diseases across Europe." @default.
