- W2994656168 abstract "This retrospective cohort study (206587) examined the economic burden of pSS in Sweden. Patients with pSS ≥18 years of age diagnosed in secondary care between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2014, were identified in the Swedish National Patient Register through the presence of an M35.0 Sicca syndrome (Sjögren’s) ICD-10 code. The index date was the date of first pSS diagnosis. Patients were matched by sex, age and county of residence with ten pSS-free general population comparators. Healthcare system burden was measured as healthcare resource use (HRU) and associated costs (SEK, adjusted to 2016). Employment data were extracted from a national administrative database. 8884 patients with pSS and 88,233 matched comparators were included. The mean age of both cohorts at index was 63 years, and 90.4% were female. Mean Charlson Comorbidity Index scores were ∼1.5 amongst 32.9% and 16.0% of patients with ≥1 comorbidity in the pSS and general population cohorts, respectively; 23.6% of patients with pSS had ≥1 recorded pSS-relevant extra-glandular manifestation at index. In 2015, mean annual cost per pSS patient was 80.3% greater (p<0.0001) than per general population comparator (mean [SD] pSS: 51,384 [80,423] SEK; general population: 28,497 [64,683] SEK). During follow-up (mean [SD] pSS: 6.6 [2.0] years; general population: 6.9 [1.7] years), patients with pSS had 106% greater (<0.0001) mean total costs and the frequency of hospitalisations and outpatient visits, and length of hospital stays, were approximately double versus the general population. Although odds of unemployment were similar, patients with pSS had four-fold odds of early retirement compared with the general population at 5 years post index (odds ratio [95% CI] 4.06 [3.24, 5.09]). Patients with pSS have higher HRU and associated costs than the general population, suggesting that substantial economic burden is associated with a pSS diagnosis. Study funding: GSK." @default.
