- W2994710540 abstract "This thesis reports on a study of the Buddhist presence in Perth, WesternAustralia, conducted between 1986 and 1991. Perth's ten Buddhistcommunities, which include about 7,000 people of mainly Australian, Britishand Asian origin, represent the three major schools of Buddhism: Theravada,Mahayana and Vajrayana. Buddhism is the fastest growing religion in Western Australia. This growthhas taken place over a period when anti-Asian feeling in the community wasbeing stirred up by small but active extremist racist groups, and when theImmigration Debate was in full swing. The thesis addresses the veryrelevant sociological question whether membership of Buddhist groups hasbeen a source of alienation or a means to integration. Perth's largest and most influential Buddhist communities were selected fordetailed research, using the methods of participant observation andinterviewing. These communities fall into two categories: the firstcomprises the Buddhist Society of Western Australia which is amulticultural Theravadan group serving about 1,000 people, together withBodhinyana Monastery and its Sangha of Western monks and nuns. The second category comprises two Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist groups, theVietnamese Buddhist Association of Western Australia and the Congregationof Vietnamese Buddhists in Western Australia, which have a combinedmembership of 2,000. In order to compare the experiences of VietnameseBuddhists with those Vietnamese following a mainstream religion, Perth's700 Vietnamese Catholics were also surveyed. The principal instrument used to measure alienation was Melvin Seeman's1971 questionnaire identifying five dimensions of alienation. Responsesfirmly rejected the suggestion that they were alienated. Integrationlevels were assessed through direct questioning. Seeman's instrumentproved effective for Westerners and well settled Asian-born Buddhists. Butwith the relatively recently arrived Vietnamese refugees, it clearly failedto tap significant experiences of alienation. Only in informal conversation in an atmosphere of trust were these mentioned, indicating aneed for culturally sensitive instruments for use with ethnic groups. The research showed that, contrary to community and governmentexpectations, Buddhism was not having an alienating effect on itsfollowers. Instead it provided them with a firm set of values, emphasisingtolerant attitudes, which facilitated their integration into the generalcommunity and made for a happy life. The comparison of VietnameseBuddhists and Catholics supported this conclusion. Perth's Buddhists foundacceptance by the secular and Christian mainstream, indicating thatreligious plurality was well tolerated in this multicultural society." @default.
