- W2995062670 abstract "Since 2015 the University of Queensland has been undertaking experimental research into magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) aerobraking using its high enthalpy expansion tube wind tunnels. The aim of this research program is to establish the feasibility of MHD aerobraking to 1) increase drag for planetary entry to low density atmospheres such as Mars, and 2) to provide an additional mechanism to dissipate kinetic energy and reduce peak heating for Earth return from deep space and other superorbital applications. The benefit of using expansion tubes for this research is the theoretical ability to recreate the correct electrodynamic boundary conditions around the simulated flight model, and at flight-realistic enthalpies. This means producing a test flow with sufficient enthalpy to ionise the shock layer, without the freestream itself being ionised. Initial work has focussed on addressing three main challenges. The first challenge has been to develop appropriate experiments to test these phenomena, which relies on the ability to create a strong interaction between the magnetic field and the flow, while ensuring the flow field remains non-conductive as in the real planetary entry case. The second challenge has been to make different measurements of the shock layer radiative emission to infer the effect of the magnetic field on various properties such as shock standoff and temperature. The third challenge has been to make measurements of the magnetic Lorentz force on the model, over the very short test times available in the expansion tube. This paper provides an overview of our progress with this research to date, discusses the various challenges and opportunities which have arisen with this new type of experiment, and outlines our plans for future research in this area." @default.
