- W2995778837 abstract "The Goethe-Institut is the official representation of German culture and language abroad. In over 160 institutes around the globe, German expatriates and qualified German teachers teach German language courses within the framework of German Auswartiger Kultur-und Bildungspolitik, that is, foreign cultural and educational politics. This combination of language and culture as a conduit for international engagement is the focus of this chapter. Accordingly, I question the different approaches that German teachers utilize when teaching language within this framework. Conversations with German teachers in Australia, Germany, Asia and South-America provide insights into the techniques used to engage adult language learners in a culturally relevant discourse as part of their language learning. Considering the specific teacher education required for teachers at the Goethe-Institut, the chapter critically examines the cultural topics and teacher-student engagement in German language classes, as well as the changing status of German against the global languages backdrop." @default.
