- W2996009564 abstract "The model legume Medicago truncatula is growing in significance as a tool and study system for ecological, evolutionary, and agricultural questions. With the wide range of genomic tools that have been specifically developed for M. truncatula, it is increasingly possible to use them for a range of questions to understand the distribution and abundance of legumes, to dissect the selective forces impacting the maintenance and loss of genetic variation, and to facilitate breeding of improved forage and grain legumes. Much of the ecological and evolutionary work on M. truncatula has focused on its rhizobial symbiosis, although intriguing work has been carried out in other areas such as abiotic stress tolerance. As a Medicago species, its importance as a forage model is closely linked to the most important legume forage crop alfalfa (Medicago sativa). With the increasing power of CRISP/Cas and other gene editing technologies, the capacity to transfer ecological, evolutionary, and agronomic insights from M. truncatula to alfalfa and other forage legumes will increase substantially in the coming years. We outline several areas of potential new work." @default.
