- W2996082703 abstract "The contribution to the cosmic opacity of ultra-high-energy (UHE) ($E>{10}^{18}text{ }text{ }mathrm{eV}$) $ensuremath{gamma}$ rays has been computed so far for the $ensuremath{gamma}ensuremath{gamma}ensuremath{rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{ensuremath{-}}$ and $ensuremath{gamma}ensuremath{gamma}ensuremath{rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}{e}^{ensuremath{-}}$ processes alone. We go a step further by systematically evaluating the additional opacity brought about by other leptons and hadrons. We find that the new dominant channels are those leading to the production of ${ensuremath{mu}}^{ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}}$ and hadrons (mainly ${ensuremath{pi}}^{ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}}$, ${ensuremath{pi}}^{0}$, ${K}^{ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}}$, ${K}^{0}$, $ensuremath{eta}$). Our result can be expressed in terms of the probability distribution for the interaction lengths. For a few interaction lengths such a probability gets reduced by up to 20%--30% with respect to current estimates." @default.
