- W2996422542 abstract "Comorbid depression complicates the management of cancer, contributing to substantial symptom burden, increased risk of mortality, and poor quality of life. The study examined the risk and severity of depression among women with breast cancer. This retrospective study utilized MarketScan Claims and Electronic Medical Records linked Database (CED) from January 1, 2002 to December 29, 2017. The first breast cancer diagnosis was the index date. Women ≥25 years of age, with a diagnosis of breast cancer, and with 12 months continuous enrollment before and after index date were included. Patients with ≥1 claim of depression diagnosis post index were considered as having depression. Depression severity was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores and categorized as minimal (<5), mild (5-9), moderate (10-14), or severe (>14) for the subset of patients with the scores. A total of 34,514 women diagnosed with breast cancer met inclusion criteria; the mean patient age at cancer diagnosis was 60 years. Overall, 7.7% of women developed depression; the mean time to the first depression diagnosis was 149 days (∼5 months), which corresponds to the cancer treatment period. The incidence of depression was higher in the younger group (25-64 years) than in the older age group (8.5% for those <64 years old vs. 6.4% for those ≥65 years). Depression severity was assessed in 240 patients. Overall, the mean PHQ-9 score was 4.8, with 12% reporting severe depression and 8% reporting moderate depression. This study found that about 8% women with breast cancer would develop depression during a mean of 5 months post their cancer diagnosis, and 12% of them reporting severe depression. These findings highlight the importance of management strategies for comorbid depression in the breast cancer population. Further research is needed to understand how depression affects cancer treatment adherence and persistence." @default.
